Overview

Kanchenjunga North and south Base camp Trek is less known than the Everest Base Camp Trek or the Annapurna Base Camp Trek. The trek takes you through fascinating Rai, Limbu and Sherpa community villages. Kanchenjunga (Treasure of the Snow) 8,586 m. is the third highest mountain in the world. From the eastern border of Nepal and India’s Sikkim. In Sherpa community,the name Kanchenjunga means ‘five treasures of snow’ which hints at the spectacular mountain views that awaits.

The trails goes northwards to Ghunsa (Beautiful Buddhist Sherpa community’s village) where it apart it climbs  to the Kanchenjunga North Base camp 5143m (Pangpema) going through the  spectacular high alpine landscapes and enjoy to see Himalayan wild animals and bird. After north base camp then a descent to Ghunsa village and it then goes east via 2 passes Mirgin la and Selel la pass crossing through beautiful Mountain views and specially Janu Himal (Kumbhakarna Himal) and continues to the Yalung Base camp 4500m and lower Kanchenjunga South base camp. After then it goes back south to Taplejung via new route Torongding to Taplethok. We can trek the same old route via Yamphudin too.

Kanchenjunga region is one of the least densely populated areas in Nepal. This trek goes through the Kanchenjunga conservation Area, Managed by local communities in partnership with WWF. Specially highlight of this area pristine forests. High-altitude wetlands are home to the endangered snow leopard, alpine meadows, Red panda, the Himalayan black bear, Himalayan deer and clouded leopard.

Itinerary

  • Day 1 : Arrival at Kathmandu
    • Altitude: 1,350 m

    Welcome to Tribhuvan International Airport Kathmandu the capital of Nepal. Your trek leader or peak summit trek representative will be there to receive you with PST Board and will be waiting with a warm greeting with traditional Khata and easy transfer to your Hotel. Check in to the hotel and then a short brief about trek and flights-out timing. Our staff will collect your passport for the Kanchenjunga Restrict permit. (We need one official working day for this permit after your arrival) Overnight at Hotel, Kathmandu

  • Day 2 : Kathmandu free day / sightseeing day

    After Breakfast our tour guide will lead you half day sightseeing visit UNESCO World Heritage sites in Kathmandu by private car. We will start by visiting the Buddhist stupa of Swayambhunath, also known as the Monkey temple. A panoramic view of Kathmandu city can be seen from the top of Swayambhunath. We then visit the Hindu temple of Pashupatinath, followed by a visit to another Buddhist stupa of Boudhanath.Boudhanath stupa is one of the biggest budhist stupa in Asia. After sightseeing there will be a trek briefing and distribution of the duffle bag. Overnight at the hotel.

  • Day 3 : Kathmandu to Bhadrapur by flight and Drive to Taplejung (1,441m)
    • Altitude: 1,441 m

    Your Guide will come to pick up you at Hotel and then we start our journey with flight to Bhadrapur 40min. if weather the is clear, a breathtaking view of the mountains Langtang range -Mt. Everest, Lhotse,Makalu and the Kanchenjunga and rivers that make up the Nepalese landscape will be seen. After we arrive at Bhadrapur, we rest for an hour. We then drive to the Taplejung along the beautiful Tea garden ”Illam” with greenery filling up our landscape. We reach Headquarter of Taplejung after 6-7hrs drive. Where our local porters will be waiting for us. Overnight at a Hotel in Taplejung.

  • Day 4 : Drive from Taplejung to Sekathum/Ranipauwa village (1,380m)
    • Altitude: 1,380 m
    • Duration: 6-7 hours

    We wake up early in the morning and take breakfast, then drive to Ranipauwa. Recently opened track at the end of Ranipauwa (Also we can trek 3 more days from taplejung to ranipauwa village along the Tamur River valley and rain forest) Our Drive begins from subtropical forest through the narrow valley and the local villages. As the valley opens we go through villages of traditional Kirati and Limbu people,who survived growing cropes such as rice,millet barely,wheat and corn from a long time.

  • Day 5 : Trek from Ranipauwa to Gyapla (2730m)
    • Altitude: 2,730 m

    We will take our breakfast around 7:00 O’clock in the morning, after the breakfast our real adventure trek will start. This day the narrow trail follows the Ghunsa river valley and we'll start climbing towards Amjilosha. As we ascend higher elevation day by day through the traditional Sherpa, limbu and Tibetan settlement, we will have to start acclimatizing slowly. After 6hrs trek we reach Gyapla. Overnight in lodge at Gyapla.

  • Day 6 : Trek from Gyapla to Ghunsa village (3,427m)
    • Altitude: 3,427 m
    • Duration: 4-5 hours

    After breakfast trek we head to Ghunsa Sherpa Village. After a climb through a dense forest of pine, fir and rhododendron trees along the ghunsa river, we arrive to a Traditional Tibetan and Sherpa village Ghunsa. which is a last permanent sattelment on the way to North Kanchenjunaga Base camp and turning point for South Kanchenjunaga base camp and yalung base camp. Overnight at Ghunsa.

  • Day 7 : High acclimatization day –rest day
    • Altitude: 3,427 m
    • Accommodation: Lodge

    To acclimatize with high altitude, Guide will lead you for a hike around 300m higher from Ghunsa and then back to lodge. Overnight in lodge at Ghunsa

  • Day 8 : Trek from Ghunsa to Khambachen (4,050m)
    • Altitude: 4,050 m
    • Duration: 5-6 hours
    • Accommodation: Lodge

    The trail follows terminal morain ot the Janu glacier. Although there is only the occasional glimpse of a snow caped peak, the views to the north and east gradually opens out to include the peaks of Phole, Sobithonge and Jannu rising majestically above the moraines of the Jannu Glacier. We have good opportunity to see wildlife sua as blue sheep, mountain goat, marmot and birds of prey like falcon and mountain eagle. Beyond the landslide the trail levels, traverses the hillside and finally descends to the small summer settlement of Kambachen. Overnight in lodge at Khambachen

  • Day 9 : Trek from Khambachen to Lhonak
    • Altitude: 4,785 m
    • Duration: 5-6 hours
    • Accommodation: Lodge
    • Meal: B L D

    The trek will continue heading to Lhonak. An easy trail continues up the west bank of the river. The view ahead becomes increasingly impressive, but attention is drawn to the upper reaches of the Ramtang Glacier, which feeds off Kambachen, the mighty western outlier of the Kangchenjunga massif. Another hour of level walking leads to the snout of the Kanchenjunga glacier across whose moraines Pyramid Peak rises at the head of the valley. It can be a windy spot. There are wonderful mountain views in all directions with the ice flutings of Wedge Peak and the snowy ramparts of Nepal and Tent Peaks presenting the ideal backdrop for a colorful sunset. Overnight in lodge at Lhonak.

  • Day 10 : Trek to Pangpema, Kanchenjunga North Base camp (5140m) and return to Lhonak
    • Altitude: 5,140 m / 4,785 m
    • Duration: 6-7 hours

    Today is a spectacular day and close to view third highest mountain in the world. The route to Pangpema from Lhonak is on a deceptively rising track which follows a shelf alongside the lateral moraine of the Kangchenjunga Glacier. The views are stunning as progress is made up the valley with Wedge, Nepal, Tent and Pyramid peaks all revealing themselves, along with the Sharphu peaks dominating the horizon down the valley. You continue to Pangpema where the view to the south opens up to reveal the Twins and, finally, the great north faces of Kangchenjunga and Yarlung Kang. Pangpema is located on a small grassy shelf above the glacier,the panoramic views are breathtaking from here. Prayer flags adorn a large boulder after taking photo and explore the North KBC then you retrace your steps to Lhonak, Overnight in lodge at Lhonak.

  • Day 11 : Trek from Lhonak to descent Ghunsa villageTrek to descent Ghunsa village (3,427m)

    Now you retrace your steps to Kambachen and Ghunsa village. It's about a four hour walk to Ghunsa from Kambachen. You walk along the west ridge of the Kambachen valley and hike down to the Ghunsa Khola, where there is a newly built suspension bridge over the river. There are superb views of the Kumbhakarna massif towering to the left side of the trail, and you have this glorious view for about half an hour, until the trail is enveloped in golden pine and various species of rhododendron. Overnight in Lodge at Ghunsa.

  • Day 12 : Trek from Ghunsa to sele la phedi (4480m) via crossing the Selela passes (4,200m)
    • Altitude: 4,480 m
    • Duration: 6-7 hours

    We start ascending from Ghunsa to selela pass along with the trail used by local people walking through less thick pine and rhododendron forest. You can see Budhist mani walls and prayer flags hanging over the poles and trees. While ascending close to pass you get views of various beautiful mountains Janu himal range also observing different Himalayan wild animals and yaks grazing over the hills. After your 6-7 hours trek you will arrives at Selela phedi/kharka. Overnight in tea houses lodge at Sele la phedi.

  • Day 13 : Trek from Selele phedi to Tseram (3,870m) via mirigin La
    • Altitude: 4,480 m / 3,870 m
    • Duration: 5-6 hours
    • Accommodation: Lodge
    • Meal: B L D

    Trek ascending today with steep 400m climb to mirgin La pass with tremendous view of Jannu Himal as well as Makalau,Barunste,chamlang,kyabru,mirigin La glacier and the Himalayan range along with the Sikkim boarder. Continue we follow the walk along the ridges and do the final descent to Tseram. Overnight in lodge at Tseram.

  • Day 14 : Trek from Tseram to Ramche (4,580m)
    • Altitude: 4,580 m
    • Duration: 4-5 hours
    • Accommodation: Lodge

    On our way ascent today we encounter the majesetic fields of rock and ice that comprise the Yalung glacier. The views are exceptional all the way to Ramche. There are basic tea houses at Ramche. We will arrive at Ramche after 4-5hours trek on launch camp. Overnight in teahouses lodge at Ramche.

  • Day 15 : Exploration hike to Okutang (South Kanchenjunga Base camp)
    • Altitude: 4,580 m
    • Duration: 5-6 hours
    • Accommodation: Lodge
    • Meal: B L D

    We will spend today hiking up the Okutang south Kanchenjunga first base camp. From this view point we can view close up to South face of Mt. Kanchenjunga and panorama of the Jannu Himal,Yalung kang include the Kanchenjunga glacier. There are five different peaks of Kanchenjunga which are called 5 Jewels of Kanchenjung also. After enjoying all the beauty of stunning view of Kanchenjunga Himal and Jannu himal we return to Ramche, Overnight in teahouses at Ramche.

  • Day 16 : Trek from Ramche to Trongdin (2,990m)
    • Altitude: 2,990 m
    • Duration: 7 hours
    • Accommodation: Lodge
    • Meal: B L D

    After breakfast we will follow the same way to tseram and then Trongdin along the Simbua Khola through varieties of pine forest. Today we will descend 1500m down from Ramche. After 7hours descent we will arrive at Torongdin. Overnight in Teahouses lodge at Torongdin.

  • Day 17 : Trek from Torongdin to Taplethok (1,380m)
    • Altitude: 1,380 m
    • Duration: 6-7 hours
    • Accommodation: Lodge
    • Meal: B L D

    We follow the new trekking trail to reach Taplethok, this route is two more day short and easy then via Yamphudin old route to reach Bhadrapur/Birtamod. We will continue to trek to Taplethok along the forest and some of limbhu villages. Finally we will arrive Taplethok after 6 hours trek. Tonight is last day of Kanchenjunga trek with your local porters so we will celebrate last day party with them and say bye. Overnight in lodge at Taplethok.

  • Day 18 : Drive from Taplethok to Birtamod (300m)
    • Altitude: 300 m
    • Duration: 7 hours
    • Accommodation: Hotel
    • Meal: B L D

    We board a jeep after breakfast for a scenic trip across the Ilam tea garden and views of Kanchenjunga and jannu Himal. After 7hrs drive we will arrive at Birtamod/Bhadrapur. Overnight at Birtamod, Hotel.

  • Day 19 : Fly back to Katmandu
    • Altitude: 1,350 m
    • Accommodation: Hotel
    • Meal: B D

    While flying to Kathmandu you will enjoy with the beautiful view if most impressive Himalayan range and farming spot on the hills.(weather permited). As you arrived in Kathmandu, the afternoon is free to explore the Thamel and you can shop around. Evening we will take you for a farewell dinner at a Nepalese traditional restaurant. Overnight at Kathmandu. Hotel

  • Day 20 : Departure Day
    • Meal: B

    After having Breakfast at Hotel,Peak summit Trek representative/your trek leader will drop you off at Tribhuvan International Airport and bid you warm farewell with traditional ‘khata’ and you will fly back to your home with all good memories of mountains, peoples and the places. Namaste!
